Raising awareness and promoting binturong

Education and awareness //

In France

Since 2015
All over France

Through our interventions, we want to raise awareness of the importance of protecting nature and the biodiversity that surrounds us. For this we promote the image of binturong. Because raising awareness is protecting!

  • Creation of educational activities for school groups.

- Creation of the World Binturong Day in 2015.
- Creation in 2020 of a "Raising public awareness of binturong protection" training courses for professionals and the general public, with the 1st training session in January 2020.
- Creation in 2021 of the educational Escape Game "Countdown for the binturongs".

The challenge: a little-known animal

The binturong is an endemic mammal of Southeast Asia and globally very little known. In reality, it is an arboreal animal that spends most of its time at a height of about 30 meters. In addition, it is mostly nocturnal and solitaryThese three characteristics make it a very difficult animal to observe in its natural environment. Since it was discovered 200 years ago, only a few scientific studies have been interested in it (mostly in captivity). Yet it plays a vital role in the dissemination of seeds. Thankfully, through awareness-raising activities and the World Binturong Day organized by ABConservation, we are getting better at making this more than discreet animal public !

Goals: raising public awareness

To raise awareness among the general public, ABConservation has set up various activities on the theme of binturong, with goals ranging from :

  • Promoting the image of the binturong, (Maybe one day he'll be as famous as the panda, who knows?),
  • Sharing knowledge, learning more about the binturong, why it's important to protect it and what role it plays in the balance of South Asian ecosystems,
  • Exposing threats and what we can do about it.

Our actions: awareness-raising activities and World Binturong Day

ABConservation uses a variety of strategies to bring the binturong to the attention of the general public.

Educational activities in zoos

Since 2015, the World Binturong Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd Saturday of May! Each year, the association is hosted by the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes in Paris, here where it all began! Indeed, it was in the capital that in 2014, the idea of creating ABConservation sprang in the mind of Pauline, the association’s president.

The day features a range of educational activities for both adults and children.

Following the model of the World Binturong Day, several educational activities in zoos are carried out throughout the year for the general public.

Educational activities in schools and for the general public

Some interventions in schools with pupils and students are implemented. Similarly, conferences and training courses are planned for professionals in the wildlife world, or in the field of pedagogy and conservation of endangered species.

With all the people who took part in the presentations, but also in the various World Binturong Days, more and more people are discovering binturong every year. These are also people who are aware of the threats to Asian forests and on which our consumption (food, cosmetics, petrol) has a direct effect. Our actions are paying off, and this motivates us all the more to continue our efforts!

If you too would like to carry the voice of our furry friend, our educational tools are available for free on our documentation area.
