Some internships

Implementation of a research study involving trap setting, monitoring and documentation of photographic traps for binturongs in El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

Date : July 11 to August 20, 2022
Duration : 1 month and a half
Location: Palawan, Philippines
Trainee : Jabes Melki Boniao
Level : Undergraduate (Midyear term - 3rd year going on to 4th year)

"I joined the ABConservation scientific team just before they left for their 3rd field trip, this one focused on tree climbing training, cage installation, hiking and discovering the El Nido site. I spent 2 weeks in the field with Aymeric, Joy, Rollyna and Sylvia, learning a lot about field activities and research, but also about the team and team building. After this first excursion, I was able to work in the ABCONSERVATION office in Puerto Princesa, and observe all the work done upstream of the research studies, such as administrative tasks and protocol development. For my last two weeks, I'll be back in the field for ten days, this time setting up the traps, then finishing with a day at the office. Overall, this internship has been an incredible opportunity and experience, involving fieldwork as well as the crucial tasks involved in conservation.
This experience confirmed my love for research and the environment."

Preparing for the Bearcat Study Program implementation through research work in the office and fieldwork in the study site at El Nido, Palawan, as well as community exposure in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

Date : June 13 to August 13, 2022
Duration : 2 months
Location: Palawan, Philippines
Trainee : Sylvia Fernandez
Level : 4th year

"During my internship, I worked as a research assistant with the scientific team (Aymeric, Rollyna, Joy, and Jabes) to gather all the necessary information and gain the experience we needed to start the Binturong study program in El Nido. I began my internship at the ABConservation office in Puerto Princesa, where I took part in the scientific tasks and reports in which we analyzed the environment and the potential presence of Binturongs at the El Nido site. I then accompanied the team for two weeks in the field, where we practiced climbing trees, setting up cages and studying the site. Finally, I was able to discover the local culture of Puerto Princesa, and chat with the locals. I was immersed in the city's culture, environment and festivals (with Romain, Priscylia and the scientific team). I was able to interview several representatives of ABConservation's partners, to talk about different perspectives on working in the conservation sector.
Overall, this internship has taught me what it means to be a researcher in an NGO both in the office and in the field, I've realized that it's not easy but it is an amazing and rewarding experience that not many people get to experience. I've also learned what conservation means, and how important local action and conservation awareness are if endangered species like the binturong are to thrive in its ecosystem."

Discovery course

Date : June 30 to July 14, 2022
Duration : 2 weeks
Location: Palawan, Philippines
Trainee : Emma and Ludivine
Level : 5th year at veterinary school

"As veterinary students in Lyon, we were lucky enough to complete a two-week discovery internship with ABConservation in the Philippines. Thanks to Romain, we were able to discover the various activities related to our future profession as veterinarians on the island of Palawan: meeting the CityVet, artificial inseminations of Carabaos, visiting the Palawan dairy farm, taking part in dog and cat sterilization days, visiting the Palawan Wildlife Rescue Center, visiting a veterinary clinic, and volunteering with ABConservation's partners: Palawan Animal Welfare Foundation and Street Dog Sanctuary. Romain also enabled us to discover the island of Palawan, its culture, gastronomy, beaches and magnificent landscapes... This internship, although short, was therefore particularly rich in discoveries, experiences and encounters!"

Creation of a camera-trapping protocol to assess the animal biodiversity of a site in Palawan, Philippines

Date : March-April 2019
Duration : 1 month
Location: Palawan, Philippines
Trainee : Eléa Delsaux
Level : L3

"My first task was to prepare the ground by drawing up a camera trapping protocol, in order to study the animal biodiversity of this site and confirm the presence of binturongs. Agathe was there to answer my questions and guide me through the exercise. During my last week of internship, we went to El Nido to set up cameras at this new study site. I loved being out in the field, it was... great! I was also able to follow all the work Agathe does on a daily basis. So I discovered the job of a researcher, all its aspects, and what working for the conservation of a species can entail. In addition to all this, Agathe also introduced me to Palawan and its culture, its beautiful places, its people... Not only did I fall under the spell of the binturong, but also that of Palawan: its landscapes are more than superb!"
